I'm pulling all weather data from Open Weather Map.org. It's an amazing free service, but things get a little flaky at times. Try reloading.
I couldn't find reliable weather data for the North Pole, so Siberia was the next best bet. Oymyakon is the coldest place I can find with (somewhat) reliable weather data via OpenWeatherMap. It's also the Pole of Cold, or at least one of the two contenders for it.
And it's a real village where people live year round, not just a remote science outpost.
The third comparison pits Minneapolis's wind chill w/ gusts figured in, versus Oymyakon's standard wind chill. For some reason OpenWeatherMap is really inconsistent about providing gust data for Minneapolis. Or maybe it's not OpenWeatherMap's fault, and just our weather station that's the problem.
Anyway, that's the reason. I realize how anticlimatic it can be. It shows up sometimes!
